Centre - Old town
Tradition and Shopping!
Standing at the foot of Mount Urgull, with the harbour on the sea side and the river Urumea followed by Gros to the east. In the Old Town you’ll come to the hub of social life in San Sebastian, with its stone-lined streets such as 31 de Agosto, named to commemorate the fire of the same date in 1813, packed with bars serving some of the best pintxos in the city. Check out the attractive and interesting Santa María del Coro Basilica and San Vicente Church.
The Plaza de la Constitución, one of the best known squares in the capital of Gipuzkoa, is also found in this part of San Sebastián. This is where famous local celebrations take place, such as the Tamborrada drumming festival.
Today the city’s largest shopping area sprawls through the streets of the so-called “romantic area”, where the big chain stores and Belle Epoque buildings are interspersed with leafy pedestrian precincts. Be sure to visit the Buen Pastor Cathedral, the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, the Plaza Guipúzcoa and the City Hall building, designed in its day as a casino. Sprawling out in front of the City Hall are the Alderdi Eder Gardens with their characteristic tamarind trees and roundabout.
